On today’s throwback review, we are going back to 2009 to pull out one of the greatest hip-hop songs that came out of Nigeria. MI Abaga is arguably the greatest African rapper of all time and it all started with his song called, Safe. Safe was produced by MI himself and he got the assistance of Djinee for his vocals.
MI created a very soft beat with just kicks, snares, hi-hats, and a simple melody loop, so as to allow the presence of his lyrical prowess to be felt. This is one of the most creative musical pieces out of Nigeria. MI used some popular songs at that time to build around his lyrical delivery, chiming out corny rhymes and melodies. His cadence and flow on the song were second to none. Lyrically, the song was A1, as MI spoke about the fact that he is the best at what he does and no one can test him.
Djinee came through with nice vocals and complimented MI's rap. The tone of his voice was good and we loved the raspiness of his voice. It felt like he was in the song with his emotional resonance.
