Zlatan Ibile is on a roll, he seems to be featuring everyone and everyone seem interested in featuring him—talk about mutual love. Zlatan is a rapper that has grown since his debut. His style of Hip Hop tilts a little towards the Azaman sound. In this track—called Shotan, he features Tiwa Savage. Tiwa Savage is probably the closest thing we have to the Afropop Queen (sorry Yemi Alade). This video as released July 15th and in that short time, it has garnered over a hundred thousand views on YouTube.

Shotan starts with Zlatan's trademark "Ibile" intro and his Kapachu cry. We liked Tiwa's part, it was infused with a freshness of sound.
Tiwa's Savage vocals appealed to us with sharp, precise tonguing and close attention must be paid to the dynamic contrasts between her vocals and Zlatan's vocals.
When Hip Hop meets Afropop, the resulting sound is something like Shotan, this piece creates an intense, rhythmic, driving, angular sound that is quite contemporary. The contrast in sounds makes this piece even more fascinating.
The instrumentals were also nice the woodwinds were playing diatonic and chromatic scales at a bright all- breve tempo.

There is just something about the majority of the Nigerian sogs out there, we just almost always have to type something negative regarding the lyrics of the song. Shotan is no exception. It is a song with poor lyrical structure and no plot development as if that was not bad enough, the quality of lyrics are not great either.
We are not a big fan of the person on the background sounding like Slimcase. It was plain unnecessary and it changed a song that would have had high-grade vocals to one with just decent vocals at the end of the day.

Bottom Line

Shotan ended up being one of those songs you will probably enjoy dancing to, for us, it does not make it to our playlist as it was mostly just average performance and it did not manage to strike any chord in us.
