Headies 2019 next rated artiste, Rema, released his 3rd project this year titled, Bad Commando. This is his most experimental project yet, as he blends different genres with his unique style of rendering songs. In his headies award speech, Rema mentioned that he is the future and we don’t have any doubts about that. Rewind is an Afro-fusion song off the Bad Commando project and it was produced by 1Mind (Producer of French Montana’s “Unforgettable”).

Positives

Rewind is a very experimental song; from the instrumental to the performance and even the lyrics. The beat started with a reggaeton infused bass guitar chords and a dancehall drum riff. At some points, the drum pattern switched to a funky groove. Rema's vocals were clear and crisp as he sang mostly in his falsetto, switching from patois flows to hip-hop flows and back. The lyrical composition was distinct, as Rema switched between political matters, his struggles and wooing a lady.
As we said, very experimental.

Negatives

Rewind was probably too experimental. The sounds clashed with each other and made the song seem noisy. The song didn't have a steady pattern. At some point, it felt like we could do the shaku and at some other point, it felt like we could hit the 'nae nae'.

Bottom Line

We don't doubt that Rema is the future, but we don't think this song proves it. But he is still growing, he is just 19!
