Don’t don’t don’t play with my heart
I can feel the difference
Dont play with my heart
Turn up for me, Turn up for me
Let the whole world know I am your woman”

When we got the request to review this song we were curious and wondering what kind of musician Mayeth Isaac was. We certainly hadn’t heard anything about her before the request. We decided to give in and review the song. As usual, you can expect an unbiased and objective review.

This song is a love song, from the lyrics quoted above, one can easily tell what it is about. Having said that, let’s dig into the review.

Positives

The thing first we really want to talk about is her vocals. It got us mesmerised from the very beginning and it reminded us one megastar musician. If you thought Rihanna, then you thought right. Her voice is distinctive yet sounds so similar to Rihanna's. It really reminded us of how Rihanna sounded especially in her second album titled, "A Girl Like Me". Mayeth reached impressive notes in this song, she sounded all edgy and raw with conviction and a powerful drive.
The Melody of the song is quite memorable, we like the afro sound the back singer was giving us in the background. She managed to mix western pop with afro sounds and it was a sensual experience for us.
The Instrumentals the song also did well to augment an already good performance, it had that dance and pop sound blended together to give us a varied yet balanced sound and rhythm.
The whole experience for us what new yet familiar, gave us sensations we do not usually get from Nigerian songs.

Negatives

Great song from Mayeth Isaac, however, we noticed a few shortcomings in the song. There are times we struggled to hear what Mayeth was saying, in fact, for an extended period of time we had to be guessing what she was actually saying. We felt her vocals could have been clearer, at a point she sounded electronic; it almost seemed like her voice was blending with the beats itself and it began to sound like autotune.
We saw little of the song online, in short information about it was scarce and we are guessing most people do not know that an awesome song like this is out there.
The song's popularity is further weakened by the lack of video, the song would have best been released with a video. We really hope Mayeth does release a video soon rather than later or never.

Bottom Line

This song is like a rare gem waiting to be discovered. Unfortunately, we are worried about the reception of fans over here in Nigeria. The notoriety of Nigerian fans preferring familiar afrobeat sounds has been the undoing of many talented Nigerian musicians. However, some musicians have managed to carve a niche for themselves and even get accepted by Nigerians. Musicians like Asa and Banky W have enjoyed such success in the Nigerian Market and we really hope Mayeth enjoys the same.
We will most definitely add "Don't play" to our playlist and as a matter of fact, we will leave it on review a couple of times.
What do you think of Mayeth Isaac and Don't play?DO you think she can carve a niche for herself in the music industry like the likes of Asa? How would you rate this song? We will like to see your ratings below.
