SONIC SOUL!

“Do your best but don’t lose yourself
Cause in the morning time, the sun go shine
Keep your heart my friend
Don’t lose yourself
In the morning time, the sun go shine
Do your best but don’t lose yourself
Cause in the morning time, the sun go shine
Shine your light, it will show you the road
It will lead you home
Hold on tight and learn to fight
Now that you’re on your own
E go hard sometimes”

One of our staff was talking about how he was discussing with his friend recently. This was the conversation that ensued between both parties.

Staff’s friend: “People that listen to Johnny Drille and the likes’ type of music always look at people that listen to Zlatan condescendingly. They be like ‘You simple creatures of poor tastes'”

Staff: (laughs hysterically) “I am probably one of those people”

Staff’s Friend: (shakes her head vehemently)

Staff: “It’s true na, I feel; like listening to Zlatan’s songs for a prolonged time can reduce one’s IQ”

Staff’s Friend: (laughs hysterically) “Happy increasing with your Johnny”

Staff: (counters) “Johnny Drille’s music is not that deep abeg”

Staff’s friend: You know!

Now after listening to this song, our staff immediately sent his friend a message with the tagline

“Listen to ‘Shine’ by Johhny Drille and thank me Later. I stand corrected about the last statement I made.”

Positives

The song starts with a simple instrumental playing then Johnny Drille starts singing with his soothing voice. A perfect intro for this kind of song.
The lyrics of the song are great. One of the best lyrics we have sincerely listened to in any Nigerian song this year. The message of the song is clear and concise. No hidden meanings or ambiguous statements. The words themselves were well strung together, giving the song continuity and a decent structure.
Johnny Drille's vocal rendition is impressive. we like that he was relaxed yet was to able to give this quality of vocal performance.
The melody of the song is a criss-cross between modern Rhythm and Blues with the faster paced Afro-pop, although the song sticks closer to Rhythnm and Blues. We enjoyed the subtle blend from both genres.
