“Pop up all the bottles up in the club tonight
Excuse me if I take a lot of drugs tonight
Ride with my niggas, fucking wrong or right
If I see the opps you know it’s on sight
I know pain and suffering, nobody gave me no apologies
I don’t care no more, I don’t wanna talk”
I did not think we were going to hear Burna Boy sing any variation of Rhythm and Blues throughout his musical career, so you can imagine our surprise when we listened to this song and it was not your conventional Burna Boy genre of music. I mean, it is not pure Rhythm and Blues, it does have Hip Hop fused into it. Burna Boy seems to be having a busy 2019 also after a very successful 2018, He just released a joint EP with DJDS and this is the first track on the EP.
We loved the intro instrumentals and then the background voices. Most of all, the seamless transition was a buttery experience.
The lyrics of the song feels like we just walked into an early 2000 song. The structure is not bad and the message was quite clear, talking about street and hustling lifestyle.
Burna Boy's vocals are calm, we enjoyed his rendition and moreso the backup singers. They did well to produce and interesting blend of sounds. Further, there no noticeable distortions, we could hear what they were singing with no difficulties whatsoever.
The melody of the song is great, tuneful and memorable. We loved the tethering between RnB and Hip Hop, it was a nice experience for us.
The song lacks a video for better publicity and an even interesting visual story.
The song is not of the mainstream genres in NIgeria. While this is a great thing, we are not sure how Nigerians will receive this. Perhaps we are not the major target audience this time? Regardless, there are some die hard Burna Boy fans that will still listen to the song.
