It was a very huge surprise when Rema dropped his mixtape in the early hours of Friday the 6th of October. We thought that after two projects in the space of six months, the best we would get are features. Well, we thought wrong, as Rema drops a 4 track mixtape titled ‘Bad Commando.’ The mixtape came just right after his headies nomination for the next rated category and it helps stamp his authority as a worthy holder in plaque.
You can read the review of the previously reviewed songs from the project here:
The most unique and distinct thing about an artist is to own a sound. Rema's sound is somewhat different from any other artist and we think this has helped propel his musical career.
Rema's versatility also showed on the mixtape, as he switched into different genres in each song. Afro-house, Reggaeton, Afro-pop, Trap, and Eastern ballad were some of the genres you could find on the mixtape.
It seems Drake and his OVO sounds team have seen a potential superstar in Rema, as they are ready to invest what they can into Rema's brand. Oliver El-khatib and 1Mind are credited as producers and co-producers respectively and both producers have since posted Rema's work on their social media platforms.
Lady was the standout track of the mixtape, as it meets the Nigerian mere standard of a groovy, melodious and danceable track.
The mixtape was too experimental and there wasn't any conventional take, except the track, 'Lady.' There isn't a potential hit track on the project as it seems he was trying out new ways to combine and blend different genres together. It feels like a project you would listen to once, pick your favorite song, and move on.
Although very well performed, Spaceship Jocelyn was our least favorite track of the mixtape, as it was a below-par take on the trap genre as to what he has churned out in the past with his Instagram freestyles.
Bad Commando mixtape will be appreciated more by Rema stans and music connoisseurs. Mere music listeners will want to go for his more conventional songs.
